A Management Development Programme on “ People Management: Issues in Retailing “
TKM Institute of Management (TIM) organized an MDP on ‘People Management: Issues in Retailing’, 4th December, 2012. The event was held at TIM Gallery hall from 10 am to 5pm. The one day programme was targeted for entrepreneurs, owners & branch managers of retail outlets. The major areas covered under the programme were Application of the Kerala Shops & Establishments Act, 1960, resolving operational & behavioural HR issues faced by retailers, & HRM in a strategic perspective. The programme started with a welcome speech by Dr.M.M.Sulphey, Professor, HR domain, TIM. The programme was inaugurated by Dr.S.Kevin, Director, TIM. The first session was about the application of The Kerala Shops & Commercial Establishments Act, 1960. The session was handled by Mr.G.L.Muraleedharan, Joint Labour Commissioner, Govt.of Kerala, & Managing Director, ODEPC Ltd. The session covered in detail the registration of retail outlets, daily and weekly hours of work, overtime work, opening & closing hours, weekly holidays, dismissal of employees, registers and records to be maintained by employer and penal provisions. The second session was about how to resolve behavioural HR issues faced by retail outlets. This session was handled by Dr.Santhosh V.A, Associate Professor, HR domain, TIM. Major areas covered under this session included motivating employees, assuring their involvement in the outlet functioning, training and development initiatives to be followed by retail outlets, and fostering a learning culture within these enterprises. The last session was about resolving operational HRM issues, and how to approach HR in a strategic perspective. This session was handled by Mr.Az-har Basheer, Asst.Professor, HR domain, TIM. This session stressed upon how to move from an individual centric approach to a system centric approach. The need for HR systems in recruitment, daily reporting, employee appraisal, rewards was also discussed in detail. The sessions concluded with a valedictory address by Prof.T.Abdul Karim Musaliar, Executive Director, TIM. Certificates and CDs containing soft copy templates were also distributed to the participants. Dr.Santhosh.V.A delivered the vote of thanks.
